The Alabama Women’s Commission, established in 1971, by Act of the Alabama Legislature, is a continuing vehicle for the determination of effective policy and legislation in areas affecting Alabama’s women. The commission is composed of three members of the House of Representatives, appointed by the Speaker of the House; two members of the Senate, appointed by the President Pro Tempore of the Senate; and 10 members appointed by the Governor.




Women's Commission Launches Speaker's Bureau

The Alabama Women’s Commission Speakers’ Bureau will serve as a resource for organizations across the State of Alabama seeking speaker(s) to address various women’s issues.

Speakers who participate in the bureau will be those who are determined to be highly qualified and effective by the Commission. Speaker information will be provided on the website and will include name, speaker topics, resume/vita (to include past speaking engagements), and contact information. Organizations wishing to invite a speaker will contact the speaker directly. The Commission will not serve as a booking agency.

Women's Commission Seeks to Commission 2008-2009 Study

The Alabama Women’s Commission is currently seeking to commission a study or studies on the status of women with regard to one of the following areas:

  • Public and private employment policies and practice
  • Labor laws dealing with hours, wages and working conditions
  • Legal rights and responsibilities
  • Policies and practices with regard to education, counseling and job training
  • Citizen Volunteers
  • Home and community

Women's Commission Meeting April 17, 2008

The Women's Commission held its second meeting of 2008 on April 17th at 11am at the Governor's Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives in Montgomery, AL.

The Commission received an update on the progress of the study commissioned in September 2007 regarding policies and issues affecting mothers and infants. Dr.Carol Zugazaga and her team will provide the final report to the Commission at its July meeting.

Other business by the Commission included a vote to initiate a new Alabama Women’s Commission Speaker’s Bureau, a review of the 2008 budget expenses as of March 31, 2008, and discussion regarding the 2009 grant award for the Commission. The Commission also recognized the outstanding work of the Women’s Leadership Institute at Auburn University and noted that several Commissioners had agreed to be involved with this program.

The next meeting of the Commission will be held on July 24 in Montgomery, Alabama.
